Cynthia & Candy

Candy is a white and tan three-legged Chihuahua who came to Pup Squad in mid September of ’09 from the Spring area.  She found shelter at a home on a dark night of torrential rain by crawling through a hole chewed in a wood fence by a Labrador then making her way to the deck area of the yard.  She must have realized that the light coming through sliding glass doors meant shelter.  She progressed onto the deck passing back and forth in front of the doors until the children inside saw her.  They called for their mother who brought the little dog inside.  This family kept her for a few days naming her Candice, Candy for short.  They took her to a vet to find out that she had a very high positive test for heartworms, extremely bad teeth, and only weighed 4 pounds and was probably about 7 years old.  She was in pretty bad shape

Candy was treated for heartworms in late January ’10 and has had her dental needs attended to as well. We owe a huge thank you to the Heights Hospital for Animals, Dr. Clint Duncan and Kathleen Gallagher for their tremendous facility, support of the rescue effort and their care of the patient during the treatment and afterwards.

Candy has been adopted by Cynthia Haycraft, one of Pup Squad’s fosters.  She has put on a full pound and enjoys going to work with Cynthia every day.  Candy still has a cough, a bad heart from the heartworms and her teeth are not the best, but she’s in much better shape than she was.  She is so very affectionate with big brown eyes that will melt your heart in a second flat. Cynthia loves to carry her around the office or let her sit in her lap while at the computer.  All Cynthia’s other dogs love to snuggle with her and she sleeps on a king size down pillow every night.
